Felix Gottwald in front of Lufthansa Cargo MD-11

New FAQ page

I recently receive questions from you on many aspects of my life. Therefore I have started collecting them in order to give you the possibility to get an instant answer to the most frequently asked questions – on my new FAQ page! You can already find out what my favourite destination is and which aircraft I have flown so far or what photo equipment I use, but I am looking forward to receive many more questions from you?

What interest you? What do you want to know? How can I help?

Trying to use the KISS principle (keep it simple and stupid) as much as I can, all question on the FAQ page are answered in brief and avoiding too much detail. Yet, sometimes there is simply more to a story than just a few sentences and I will be answering those complicated question in full detail in my blog in the future!

So go ahead and ask me! Simply drop your questions right below in the comments section!

The MD11 is getting rare – many pilots regard it as unsafe, hard to fly and it has a certain history of accidents. What do you think about that plane? What are you going to do when the MD11 is dismissed by Lufthansa?

It is nice to see you posting Videos or other Stuff about Planes and all the things regarding your Job as a Pilot. Is it possible to choose the Pilot for the next flight like choosing our Doctor? 😛

Hey! Love your pictures! I was wondering how pilots remember all these commands in short amount of time?

When I listen to ATC, lets say JFK, the ATC sometimes just “come at you” with dozens of orders at once. Many times on the other end, I hear pilots replying to ATC right away with the correct read backs as if they knew the orders in the head before and are just reading all of it out.

Swissair 111 , they had a undetected fire not visible over the cockpit ceiling almost one hour after take off from JFK …

    Dear Felix,

First of all, thank you for sharing your pilot experiences, it is an inspiration. I would like to ask you wich is your most memorable flight.

    Greetings from Buenos Aires, Argentina

well I’ve read an article some time ago that it is much harder to control the MD11 when landing because it has a much heavier tail because of the third engine, that’s why it seems to be pretty unpopular. Like to hear a pro’s opinion

    Hi Felix,
Thank you for your photos and videos. They are all great and fun to look at! My question … I have heard of loads shifting on cargo planes, causing serious problems. How do you, as pilots, insure that whatever is loaded on your jet is properly loaded and fastened down? Do you inspect the freight and how it is loaded or do you simply leave it up to the cargo handlers? Are the people who load the freight in foreign countries LH employees? I remember an incident a few years ago where a 747 loaded with military equipment (possibly vehicles) crashed upon take off because the cargo was not properly positioned and it shifted at takeoff.
