Standby – Day 1

I got up this morning shortly past 4 am and took the first flight from Dresden to Frankfurt at 6 o’clock. Today is the first day of my standby shift that started at 8 o’clock and since then I haven’t done much. I have been sitting around in the Lufthansa Cargo breakroom all day, watching TV and surfing on the internet. I even went to take some photos, although the weather was way too cloudy to take good pictures. Here is one of them, an Aerologic Boeing 777F over the numbers of runway 25R:

Aerologic Boeing 777F on approach to Frankfurt's runway 25R.

Nobody has called me yet to fly one of our magnificient MD-11s to an exotic place somewhere in the world. Nobody has called in sick and I don’t believe that it will still happen today. The first six hours hours of my standby shift I had to make sure that I would be at the airport within one hour. For the next 24 hours the rule is that I have to be in the briefing room within six hours, so I could even meet some friends or check-out one of the many cities in the vicinity.

But as it is getting dark outside, I feel that it is finally time to go and find a hotel room. But before that I will visit my favourite fast food restaurant at Frankfurt Airport serving Thai Food – Thong Thai! Nr. 38 is waiting for me… 🙂

I’ve never heard of standby shifts, was quite interesting to read.
And I don’t know what you have, the picture you took is great! I’ve always loved the 777 series and I can’t wait to see some 777’s in the colours of the german Lufthansa neyt year.

    Hi,
Kopf hoch. Ich mag den Blog ĂŒbrigens sehr!
